This was such a crazy experience to witness! In October 2020, a storm caused Venice tides to flood the streets and squares of the iconic lagoon city. We waded around town through water and walked across raised platforms. Another flood was coming the next day, but they finally engaged a new flood barrier system for the first time. Billions of dollars and with innovative engineering and determination, the city turned on its MOSE project—an underwater barrier system designed to protect this iconic destination from flooding, and it worked! The streets remained dry and we weren’t wading through ankle deep water. It was a surreal reminder of nature's power and human ingenuity working hand in hand to safeguard this mesmerizing lagoon city for generations to come.
