SUPPORT ME ON PATREON: http://www.patreon.com/tokyotoybastard INSTAGRAM @tokyotoybastard I hope you guys are enjoying this new series of Japanese tv shows and movies, a format that I will continue to explore more throughout 2023, diving into some more obscure, and not-so obscure Japanese and other personally influential properties. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FUN FACTS! Some fun facts about Sukeban Deka (for those who click the drop down menu, which also helps boost YouTube search algorithms 😉) Yoko Godai’s iron mask was inspired by medieval helmets, but it would go on to itself inspire the mask worn by Jagi in Fist of the North Star (along with Lord Humungus from Mad Max), who made his manga debut the same year that Sukeban Deka II began airing. Sukeban Deka I u0026 II also inspired countless anime and video game characters, including Ryuko Matoi from Kill la Kill, as well as Quentin Tarantino’s character Gogo Yubari from Kill Bill. You’ll notice a lot of similar sounding music, sound effects and filming locations from other TOEI productions, including Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and some of the Metal Heroes franchises. There was also a 3rd season of Sukeban Deka that was initially planned to be two different spin-offs, one focused more on ninja, but the ideas ended up being combined to create a more “ninja-centric” Sukeban team with more references to actual ninjutsu than in any previous seasons. Shojo Commando Izumi (Shoujo Commando), also started as a spin off of Sukeban Deka. You may be familiar with that title as it was discussed in one of Kenny Lauderdale’s somewhat recent videos (he also had a video about Sukeban Deka, but for whatever reason he made it a Members Only exclusive a couple years after publishing it. I actually was inspired to make my own videos due to the lack of YouTube content about the series.) In total there were two original theatrical films, one that acted as a sequel to Sukeban Deka season 2, featuring most of the the original cast of Season 2 and introducing the main cast of Season 3, while confusingly there is also a movie called Sukeban Deka 2, that is a follow-up to season 3. Both of which are widely available in DVD format internationally, despite the tv series never being released officially in English. As mentioned in the first part of this video series, there was also a poorly made reboot of the same title in 2006, which also got an international DVD release (and was the primary reason that the other two original films saw international releases in the first place). It featured Yuki Saito, the original Saki Asamiya, who is now 40-something year old mother of the new recast Saki, played by Aya Matsuura. The 2006 version was directed by Battle Royale screenplay writter, whom also wrote and directed Battle Royale 2. Sukeban Deka was a huge influence on him in the 80’s, hense his desire to write and direct a reboot of the series. Too bad his version sucks. Until 2021, a yo-yo shop located in Akihabara, Tokyo featured a glass showcase “shrine” dedicated to toy and prop yo-yo’s from Sukeban Deka, along with other related items. The shop closed down due to the pandemic and has since relocated to Koenji, Tokyo - where the Sukeban Deka yo-yo shrine is nowhere to be seen 😭
