For online gamers, acquiring and upgrading weapons is a regular pursuit. In the real world, crafting weapons is a far more intricate process. In this talk, Mpu Ibnu guides us through the creation of a traditional Javanese weapon, the Keris. Each Keris carries profound philosophy and a meticulous crafting process, from using materials representing heaven and earth for the blade to the symbolic union of two people in the locking process, and the artful formation of curves and patterns balancing flexible and hard materials. Ibnu Pratomo, a passionate blacksmith and co-founder of Pijar Komunitas Menempa Indonesia, is dedicated to preserving the fading cultural values associated with forging. Born in Jakarta, Ibnu's journey into blacksmithing began during his high school years when he explored the art of forging. His commitment deepened during his master's program in Fine Arts at ITB, where he delved into researching and crafting traditional weapons like keris. In 2012, Ibnu, along with five colleagues, founded Pijar to create a community that educates and revives the art of blacksmithing, emphasizing the cultural and historical aspects of weaponry and also aimint to instill cultural pride in the younger generation. Beyond crafting traditional weapons like kujang and keris, Pijar now produces a range of men's accessories, marketed under the name Saltig, blending cultural motifs with contemporary designs. Ibnu's dedication has earned international recognition, with one of his creations becoming a gift for Necmettin Bilal Erdogan, the son of Turkey's President Recep Erdogan. Mpu Ibnu's talk was recorded at Keong Emas Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, East Jakarta for TEDxJakarta—a 100% volunteer driven movement commited to ideas worth spreading, visit us at www.TEDxJakarta.org. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
