For ‘Catch of the Day’, Sarah Watt utilised her painterly skills and adeptness with irony to capture the life working behind the counter of a fish shop where customers objectify the young female shop assistant. Sarah Watt was an AFI award-winning director for both animation and live action. Her animated films were ‘Small Treasures’ (1995 AFI award winner ‘The Way of the Birds’ (2000 AFI Award nomination), ‘Living With Happiness’ (2001 AFI Award winner) and ‘Local Dive’ made for SBS as part of an animation anthology titled; ‘Outside the Flags’. Watt began a transition to live action in 1998 with her short film ‘Derwent Envy’. Her first feature film, ‘Look Both Ways’ with a cast that included Justine Clarke and husband William McInnes, received four AFI Awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor and the Discovery Award at the Toronto Film Festival. Her last film ‘My Year Without Sex’ opened the Adelaide Film Festival and was nominated for an AFI Award for Best Original Screenplay and Best Lead Actress. Both these films have stories that examine the impact of life-threatening illness on personal relationships. Sarah Watt worked as an animation teacher for the Victorian College of the Arts School of Film and Television from 1995-1998. In 2011, Watt lost her battle with breast and bone cancer. Her two children Clem and Stella, and her husband, actor William McInnes, survive her.
